In the spring of 1971, a forty-five-year-old Kansas farmer named Virgil Stanton walked into a John Deere dealership to look at the new 4020. The dealer offered him a trade: bring in that old 1949 Farmall M, get $500 credit toward a brand new tractor. Virgil looked at the gleaming green machine, thought about his father's tractor sitting at home, and said two words: "No deal." The dealer laughed in his face. "Are you insane? You'd rather keep a twenty-two-year-old piece of junk than drive out of here in a new John Deere?" Virgil walked out without answering. Fifteen years later, when the farm crisis had destroyed everyone who'd taken that deal, the same dealer showed up at Virgil's door. He wasn't laughing anymore. He was begging. This story draws from real agricultural history of the 1970s-80s. Characters and dialogue are dramatized for storytelling. Have you ever walked away from a deal everyone said you should take?
