(12 Jun 2012) Spanish miners cut off a highway in the northern province of Asturias on Tuesday as part of nationwide strike action by unions opposed to government cuts. The strikers, who are now into their second week of protests, blocked the highway with a barricade of burning tyres. Many covered their faces with hoods and scarves to prevent themselves from being identified by the police. Armed with stones and slingshots, they later clashed with the Spanish Civil Guard, who used rubber bullets to try to disperse them. Taking cover in a nearby forest, the strikers used homemade rocket launchers to shoot at the Civil Guard. The miners - who are located mainly in the Asturias and Leon regions - are protesting against a proposed cut in government support for mining. State subsidies are to be slashed by 64 percent - down from 300 (m) million euros (374 million dollars) to just 110 (m) million euros (137 million dollars). Spain's main mining unions are worried that if the cuts are pushed through before the end of the year, most of the mines will have to close. The miners have promised to keep up their fight against the measures. Unemployment in Spain stands at a eurozone high of 24.4 percent. Madrid has imposed spending cuts and tax hikes to try to escape the crisis that many fear may eventually swallow other countries using the European single currency.
