We asked educators what global competence meant to them. Here's what they said. [text: We asked educators to offer their perspectives on global competence. Here’s what they said.] Jacey MacDonald, Martin Millennium Academy: I think that global competence is having the ability to interact effectively with people who are different from you. And that’s very important for students today as our world is becoming more and more connected. Kathryn Hodskinson, Holt Language Academy: I think it’s about international awareness, awareness of different countries. Children being aware of not only their place in the classroom, in the school and their hometown, but their place in the world. That idea of global competence is really a kind of a term that incorporates so many different things to me. Star Sampson, Holt Language Academy: I think it’s a beautiful way for the children to connect with other cultures and they realize that in this world, it’s not just me. John Farrelly, Edgecombe County Public Schools: Students who are well rounded, students who are appreciative of different cultures and different backgrounds who are aware and who are invested in being a great citizen. Anamaria Knight, Participate Learning: Global competence is this understanding and awareness of one’s self as an active participant in the world– not just an observer. Thinking differently, taking on different perspectives. Antigone Peek, Owen Elementary School: Being able to work together as a team, being able to come up with solutions, being able to solve problems. Erin Swanson, Martin Millennium Academy: So when I think about a globally competent teacher, I don’t necessarily think about a teacher who is able to have knowledge about everything in the world, or every region in the world, but is able to have a clear sense, a clear vision for where they want their students to be at the end of the year- to understand this is what I want my kids to know about the world at the end of the year, this is what I want my student to be able to do at the end of the year and then to really be a facilitator–to help them gain that understanding and to put the kids in the front, and to really let them drive their own learning. Sharon Govender, Holt Language Academy: It embraces the entire world and the kids just love to learn about the different countries. And through the process, I’m also learning as well. Antigone Peek: For me as a leader, I want to thinking greater than themselves. And how we can help our fellow me. Participate Learning is a force for good that connects teachers and students through global education programs to foster human understanding and create peace around the world.
