Kenya increases restrictions to combat new coronavirus

(7 Apr 2020) Kenya increased restrictions on Monday to combat the new coronavirus, announcing travel bans into and out of the capital city, Nairobi, the port of Mombasa, and two counties. There are fears the country, which has a population of over 50 million, would not be able to cope with the virus - it reportedly has only 578 intensive care beds. Thousands of travelers and families with children were left stranded and unable to cross county borders between Nairobi and the adjacent Machakos County. Some argued with police while others tried to force their way past barricades, only to be arrested. Hundreds more attempted to circumvent the blockades by walking through adjacent fields and back routes with a reduced police presence. One high ranking police officer admitted there were problems. "On our side we are preventing people from the other side to enter Nairobi and Nairobi to the other side," said Catherine Ringera, Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), Athi River Police Division. "So there are a lot of hiccups." Kenya has 158 cases and six deaths from the virus. The African continent now has more than 10,000 coronavirus cases, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Out of Africa's 54 countries, all but two now have the virus. The shortage of testing capabilities across the continent has raised concerns that the number of actual cases in Africa could be much higher. According to United Nations Development Programme, the COVID-19 pandemic is set to hit developing countries disproportionately as it ravages their health systems and fragile economies. For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
