Introduction: The gin tablature of Gulls Oblivious to Danger originated in A Mysterious Collection of Qin Tablatures compiled by Zhu Quan in the Ming Dynasty. There is a fable in Lie Zi, a collection of stories, fables and legends of wisdom and philosophy in the Warring States period (475B.C.—221B.C.): "In ancient times, there was a man who used to stroll by the seaside and whom the seagulls often ventured close to and befriended. When his father heard this, he asked him to catch one or two seagulls and bring them back for his entertainment. So this man went to the seaside once more to catch the seagulls, only to find that they had all flown far far away." The Chinese idiom "ou lu wang ji" ( gulls oblivious to danger) stands for the moral of this story, which is, if one forsakes such schemes and ulterior motives, there will be harmony among different species and pleasure from nature. With a touch of sadness, the melody celebrates the spirit of truth, good and beauty.
