When sanding a project such as a new dovetailed drawer, you can use a random orbital sander to get most of the sanding done, but getting into the tight spots in the corners can be a little difficult with a large sander. And this problem becomes magnified when sanding in even tighter spaces. Joe has a solution: make your own sanding stick. This simple stick can be made from just about any piece of wood, depending on your needs, but Joe likes to make them from paint stirrer sticks. They're thin, relatively sturdy and in some cases, free at a paint store. If you have to buy them at the orange or blue home centers, they typically cost no more than a couple of bucks for a ten-pack. The best part of this little sanding hack is that it is completely customizable not only with the size of the stick being used, but also with the grit of sandpaper being employed. So you may want to make a few sticks with varying grits of sandpaper to progress through as you sand your project.
