Empowering journalism-approaches to automatic text summarization |Milena Djordjevic| DSC Europe 2022

Advances in Natural Language Processing over the last couple of years have allowed us at TX Services to go beyond purely academic uses and apply AI in various industries where text dominates data. One popular example is digital publishing - various internet platforms and news centers where journalists work relentlessly to provide the best content to readers. In many of its use cases journalists face conflicting tasks: on the one side maximization of the amount of information provided for a certain event, and on the other preservation of reader's attention and curiosity. This trade off represents a search for a most suitable, informative, yet concise piece of text - and this is exactly where summaries fit in. Automating the way summaries are written can not only improve the process of content creation, but also empower readers in choosing the right content for them while informing themselves on the crucial data from an article. In this talk she shared her learning on how to approach news summarization, what the common pitfalls are when building such a system and how Data Science can facilitate this automation in future.
