Construction of Terminal 3, the centerpiece of Shanghai Pudong International Airport's Phase IV expansion, is officially underway. The terminal is expected to be completed by 2028. In 2019, Pudong International Airport served over 76 million passengers, nearing the designed capacity of its current facilities. Terminal 3 will play a crucial role in meeting future demand of accommodating 50 million passengers annually. The new terminal will feature 90 gate positions, including 31 convertible gates—setting a record for airports in China. The layout of Terminal 3 is designed to minimize the need for passengers to transfer between floors. After passing through security, the farthest walking distance to gates for international, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan flights is 650 meters, taking approximately 8.5 minutes. For domestic flights, the farthest walking distance is 450 meters, taking about 6 minutes. With over 70% of its public areas enjoying natural lighting and ventilation, the terminal is setting a benchmark for eco-friendly airport design. The terminal will also house the largest photovoltaic system among Chinese airports, covering an area of over 90,000 square meters with an installed capacity exceeding 16 megawatts.
