The summit brings together the leaders of 53 countries from some of the world's richest to the poorest. Commonwealth foreign ministers have already been holding advance talks in Malta. A key theme of the summit will be trade - and the Commonweath's call for the developing world to get a better deal on trade at the World Trade Organisation talks in Hong Kong in December. New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark urged EU negotiators to budge on agriculture at crucial global trade talks next month in Hong Kong, saying the session would fail unless Europe made concessions. Agricultural subsidiaries and other privileges enjoyed by many former European colonies have proved a thorny issue at the WTO talks, which are aimed at helping poor nations gain better access to global markets. Commonwealth secretary-general Don McKinnon said there must be benefits for developing countries. Commonwealth country foreign ministers on Thursday held a second, final day of talks at the Malta forum focused on agricultural subsidiaries and other market benefits. The meeting steps up its profile on Friday to consultative talks among government leaders from the Commonwealth, which accounts for roughly a third of the world's population. The CHOGM summit will be opened by Queen Elizabeth II on Friday.
