Bus trip to St Cyrus. Kaim of Mathers.. My Cap blew off with Headcam.!! Big detour to retrieve it. Got it back just before the tide got it. The remains of the Kaim of Mathers is located on rock pinnacles on the northernmost part of the beach. Built by the Berkeley (or Barclay) family, it was used as a refuge by David de Berkeley from the vengeance of the king when, around 1420, he was part of a group who murdered the local sheriff, John Melville of Glenbervie.(wiki) The Kaim of Mathers was built by David Barclay to serve as a short-term, secure residence as he attempted to shelter from the law for alleged acts of murder and cannibalism. Whilst this story is unlikely to be entirely true, the exposed location meant the structure was not occupied for long before the family moved to more comfortable lodgings in nearby St Cyrus. Allegedly the remains of a castle erected in the 15th century, on a rocky peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. The isthmus was guarded by two rows of battlements, one of which still remains, well-preserved. There are traces around the greater part of the rock, and on its sea-ward extremity, there are the remains of a square tower, accessible only by leaping over a chasm.
