The Jet Propulsion Laboratory holds a unique place in the universe. Here’s why. Located in Southern California, JPL is NASA’s leader in robotic exploration. We’ve sent rovers to Mars, probes into the farthest reaches of the solar system, and satellites to advance understanding of our home planet. Founded in 1936 as a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, JPL built and helped launch America’s first satellite, Explorer 1, in 1958. By the end of that year, Congress established NASA, and JPL became a part of the agency. Since then, JPL has continued to push the boundaries of what's possible, pioneering groundbreaking missions that expand our knowledge of the cosmos and inspire the next generation of explorers.
