Korea's first simultaneous seven multi-organ transplantation was successfully performed last October by Dr. Dae-Yeon Kim and his team, from AMC Children's Hospital Pediatric Surgery Department, bringing new life to a seven-year-old girl who had been fighting a rare disease since the age of one. Little Eun-Seo was born prematurely in 2005, and suffered from chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, abbreviated 'CIP.'This disorder, which impairs intestinal motility, caused her to vomit whatever she ate and it disturbed the digestive absorption of any food that she did manage to eat. Young-Ah Kim / Patient's guardian At meals, she couldn't eat more than one spoonful of food. Any more than that, and she would throw up and have a rough time. But, little Eun-Seo's seemingly unattainable dream came true. Eun-Seo Cho / CIP patient When I get home, I want to go to the playground with my brother, and play on the swings and sliding board. Eun-Seo depended on IV nutrition to survive for her whole life, and in her condition, she was not expected to live past the age of ten. But after a period of waiting, a brain-dead organ donor was finally found. In a nine-hour surgery, Eun-Seo underwent a successful simultaneous transplant of liver, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small intestine, colon, and spleen. Dr. Dae-Yeon Kim / AMC Department of Pediatric Surgery Generally, in this kind of surgery, the one-month survival rate is less than 70%, even at top international hospitals. But Eun-Seo's surgical outcome and post-transplant progress have been good. Four months later, she can eat meals without much trouble, and intravenous nutrition was stopped a month ago. This is the first successful case in Korea for performing simultaneous transplantation of more than three abdominal organs. This success story brings new hope to patients with this rare disease, for whom multi-organ transplantation is the only way for a complete cure. Meanwhile, the Asan Foundation has decided to support Eun-Seo's treatment costs in full, including all costs so far of around 100,000 USD, as well as any hospital bills from her ongoing care and recovery.
