In this video we see a compilation of the Sydney Trains S Set EMU. Filmed in 2014 & 2016, we see the trains at various locations around the Sydney suburban rail network. Built by Comeng and Goninian, 509 carriages were built between 1972 & 1980, and were the first double decker EMU to be introduced on Sydney's suburban rail network following the success of the Tullouch double decker trailers and the four prototype double decker carriages. Throughout their lives they could be seen anywhere on the Sydney suburban network, as well as running local services in Newcastle and Wollongong. At the end of their lives they were based out of Flemington depot and generally ran on the T2 Inner West & Leppington, T3 Bankstown, T6 Carlingford, T7 Olympic Park & T8 Airport & South lines. The name S Set didn't necessarily refer to the name of the train, but rather how the carriages were marshaled together. L Sets were two carriages together, R Sets were three carriages together, while S Sets were four carriages together. In the end only the four-car S Set configuration remained. The trains were long unpopular with commuters as the trains didn't have air conditioning, making them quite unbearable in Australia's hot summers. They were nicknamed the 'Sweat Sets' by commuters. The S Sets were supposed to have been completely retired by 2015 as the new Waratah (A Set) EMU's entered service, but growing patronage and the opening of the South West Rail Link meant that a number of trains were kept in service... until now. After 47 years of service the S Sets will finally be retired after the last of the new Series 2 Waratah trains (B sets) entered service. The last full day of service was on the 28th June 2019 with one set running on the T7 Olympic Park line, running the last ever service the following morning; the 12:01am service to Lidcombe. A public farewell will take place on the 21st July 2019, with a total of 14 carriages to be preserved. Subscribe to ThebusofdoomFSX: https://www.youtube.com/user/Thebusof...
