Separated by a bridge from the rest of the resort, Swarm Island offers a striking and detailed landscape that tells the story of an invasion by a mysterious force known only as “The Swarm.” It’s one of the most immersive areas at Thorpe Park, with wreckage, destroyed emergency vehicles, and dramatic effects creating a cinematic experience like no other. At the centre of Swarm Island is The Swarm, the UK’s first and only B&M wing coaster. Opened in 2012, this 127-foot-tall roller coaster is designed to simulate flying through the chaos left behind by the invasion. As riders board trains with seats mounted on either side of the track, they are exposed with nothing above or below them, intensifying the feeling of flight. The ride begins with a 180-degree roll off the lift hill into a dramatic dive drop, followed by a zero-g roll where guests pass exploding fire trucks, the wing of a real decommissioned passenger aircraft, and narrowly miss billboards and collapsed buildings. Throughout the ride, on-board sensors trigger fire, smoke, and sound effects, creating moments of high tension and spectacle as The Swarm tears through the twisted landscape. The layout includes five inversions and high-speed turns, making use of near-miss elements and wide open trains to deliver a different experience on every seat. From the intense front row views to the dramatic swing and hang time in the back, The Swarm is one of the most re-rideable and visually spectacular roller coasters in the country. Swarm Island is unique in that it contains only one attraction—The Swarm—but it is packed with theming and storytelling. From the scorched church ruins to overturned ambulances and fallen signage, the area paints a bleak and detailed picture of a world torn apart. It’s a fully enclosed environment that feels separate from the rest of Thorpe Park, offering a more intense and cinematic atmosphere. Swarm Supplies, a themed merchandise shop, is located at the ride’s exit, offering exclusive The Swarm apparel, gifts, and drinks. Thorpe Park, located in Surrey and operated by Merlin Entertainments, is one of the UK’s most popular theme parks. Since opening in 1979, it has become known for its extreme coasters and thrill rides including Nemesis Inferno, Colossus, Stealth, Saw The Ride, and Hyperia. As of 2025, the park continues to evolve with new developments such as Fearless Valley and the proposed transformation of Amity Beach into a live entertainment plaza.
