Every year, our bees swarm and we haven't been so fortunate to get ahead of it. So, this year, I decided to proactively split our only hive in hopes that we will then have two healthy and productive hives. It's a risk...because both hives could die if done improperly, or just leave. Splitting of a hive not only helps to prevent swarming (which is natural bee behavior in the spring, and sometimes summer) but it also helps with varroa mite control, creates a new queen with desired genetics from a strong hive and gives you more bees without having to buy a package or nuc! I'm not an expert, and this is my first split. In the end, my new split has 4 brood frames (with the queen), 1 pollen frame, and 5 honey frames (that we had stored in our freezer from the previous year). The old hive, which now needs to make a new queen, was left at 2 deeps because of the sheer amount of bees. We use Apimaye Hives, after having years with little success on the Langstroth hives (this could have mostly been due to our lack of experience). But our bees overwinter well in the Apimaye hives, and we find them much easier to use and they last longer. https://apimaye-usa.com/ These Saksatraz bees were purchased from Mann Lake and installed as a package 1 out of 3) in early 2020. One hive swarmed in a couple of months after we installed them - no idea why. Sometimes it just happens. The second hive died over the winter, I believe they broke the cluster and froze to death. And the third (which is in this video) was the strongest by far out of all bees we've had. So, splitting this hive to create a similar hive in strength and production is our goal! https://www.mannlakeltd.com/
