In recent years, the cost of housing has risen sharply across Europe. From Paris to Warsaw, Dublin to Athens, an increasing number of people in the EU are struggling to get affordable housing. Rents have exploded, neighbourhoods gentrified, and public spaces privatised, leaving more and more people facing homelessness or precarious living conditions. Interestingly, this crisis is no longer confined to the most vulnerable groups, as it now includes many middle-income families. House prices and rents have increased steadily since 2014, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike previous economic downturns, the demand for housing surged as extended lockdowns and the rise in teleworking kept people confined to their homes. Right as the economy began to recover in 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine brought a fresh array of budget headaches for governments and a major cost-of-living crisis for households. In today’s video, we delve deeper into Europe’s housing situation to find the root causes and highlight a few possible solutions to this growing yet under-reported crisis.
