Between these layers is the peritoneal cavity, containing a small amount of lubricating fluid that allows for the frictionless movement of the organs. Key structures within the peritoneum include the greater and lesser omenta, mesentery, and various ligaments that support and stabilize the organs. In contrast, the retroperitoneum is the anatomical space behind the peritoneum. 🏥 Organs located in the retroperitoneum include the kidneys, adrenal glands, pancreas (except the tail), parts of the duodenum, ascending and descending colon, and the aorta and inferior vena cava. These organs are not surrounded by the peritoneum but are instead covered anteriorly by the parietal peritoneum. This positioning provides a unique clinical perspective, as retroperitoneal organs are often involved in trauma, infections, and malignancies that can present differently from intraperitoneal conditions.
