On 25 February 2026, Land Research Indonesia hosted a focused seminar discussion on legal recognition, governance, and the politics of indigenous recognition in Indonesia. This session featured: Lilis Mulyani, PhD Researcher, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Indonesia Chair, Indonesian Young Academy of Sciences PhD, Melbourne Law School, The University of Melbourne Supervised by Prof. Tim Lindsey and Prof. Kirsty Gover The seminar examined the book Adat Group Entities as Legal Persons, which analyzes how the Indonesian state constructs and categorizes adat communities as legal subjects. The discussion addressed: Legal personhood and adat group recognition Processes of simplification and homogenization in state administration Autonomous self-governing entities versus state-governing units Implications for autonomy, representation, and territorial governance Legal pluralism and the politics of institutional recognition The session situates adat recognition within broader debates on state power, legal abstraction, and indigenous governance in Indonesia.
