Chief photographer from the British Museum, John Williams, visited the Viking Museum in Roskilde, Denmark. He and his assistant are documenting the ancient viking ships for an exhibition at the British museum in spring 2014. John Williams: "This is the first boat we are going to shoot. It is called Skuldelev III. It is a coastal trading boat. It was built in about 1040. We will try bouncing it off the wall. We are trying to use the daylight we have got here from the window and the wall itself which is white. So we are going to try a simple technique which is bouncing the light off the wall to fill in the dark side of the boat. Each boat will be shot from the front and the back. That is to show the difference in size between one boat for one purpose and another boat for another purpose. Additionally, the curator is particularly concerned that we record certain details of the boat where you can see oar holes and detail shots to show the build quality and technique. The important thing with this boat is that it is made from planks of wood from another boat. You can see the different color of the wood indicating that it was another boat taken apart and reused the planks. The only thing we are interested in here is the oar hole. And where the other oar hole used to be and was filled in when the boat was remade. Having reliable kit is important because there is a lot of other issues to do with access for a photographer than generally working in a studio. Once you get that precious access you have go to get in and get out and make sure that when you leave, you have got it."
