Jamaica's Black River Hospital in St Elizabeth Parish was seen in ruins on Thursday (October 30) after Hurricane Melissa tore off roofs, flooded wards and knocked out power and water, forcing staff to move patients as road blockages delayed ambulances for more than a day, hospital staff said. Drone footage showed yawning holes in the pediatric ward roof and debris-strewn corridors. "We tried to clear the hospital as much as possible," said accident and emergency doctor Janna Simpson, describing how patients were shuttled between floors as ceilings gave way and floodwater surged through the emergency area. Hospital administration supervisor Oneil Brown said communications were down and staff were working without word from their own families. With the hospital non-functional, emergency cases were being diverted, likely adding strain to facilities in Kingston and Mandeville, staff said. Authorities said Melissa made landfall in Jamaica's southwest as a Category 5 storm, leaving at least four people dead on the island, while at least 25 people died in Haiti after days of torrential rain. More than 70% of Jamaica's electricity customers were still without power on Thursday morning as soldiers and emergency crews cleared blocked roads, officials said. By late Thursday, Melissa had weakened to Category 1 strength over open ocean and was expected to pass northwest of Bermuda, forecasters said. In the Bahamas, officials lifted storm warnings but stopped short of declaring an all-clear as assessments continued. Staff at Black River Hospital said the damage would likely force changes in hurricane preparedness. "There's not one area without wreckage," Simpson said. "It will have a huge impact, but eventually we can make it."
