Penfield Reef Lighthouse: the Penfield Lighthouse is on the south side of Black Rock Harbor entrance on the Long Island Sound, off the coast of Fairfield, Connecticut. It was built 1874, it was one of the last offshore masonry lights. In 1969, the Coast Guard proposed to replace the lighthouse with a steel tower but the state U.S. Reps. and residents objected. By 1971, the light was automated and, after 97 years, no longer needed a keeper. The lighthouse was designed with a kitchen, living room and 4 bedrooms on the second floor. It stands majestic off the shore of Fairfield Beaches and is important to water navigation. It's a highlight of the Fairfield shoreline. If you are thinking of relocating or moving to Fairfield, the shoreline is where its at! Swimming, boating, fishing, we have it all!
