Julius Katchen (1926-1969) was another of the great pianists to appear on the music scene after WWII. At the Curtis Institute of Music, Katchen studied under the same teacher, David Saperton who had taught Abbey Simon, Jorge Bolet, Shura Cherkassky among others. Katchen died at the young age of 42 of cancer. He is particularly known for his recordings of Brahms. Like Bolet, he was not a technician but played more in the romantic and broad style. Earl Wild labeled it "big piano playing." The Richmond label, was the discount label owned by London/Decca. As can be seen - the bargain $1.98 price was printed right on the cover (although that was close to $20 in current US dollars.) The record came with no liner or cover notes. I purchased my copy at a thrift store for 50 cents a few years ago. The LP itself looked good, but upon playing it had a tremendous amount of surface noise. But all of the noise was on the left channel, so as this is a mono recording - I made this transfer entirely from the right channel.
