Welcome to episode 3 of the ATC 90 restoration. Im this episode im going to be concentrating on the bodywork and paint side of things. The first job i decided to tackle was stripping down the seat unit, all of the fixings were very rusty so most of them sheared or required grinding off. Once that was done it was time to head outside and wash off years of grime and grease and get a good look at what i was dealing with. Once dried off many bad repairs to the fiberglass became apparent so i set about stripping off all the old fiberglass and ended up with a seat unit in several pieces when i was done. I the ground down all remaining residue in preparation for applying a complete new layer of fiberglass matt to add structural integrity back to the unit. after 2 layers were applied it was left to cure and topped off with a couple of layers of gel coat to protect the fiberglass matting and give a smooth factory looking finish. The tank and other metal body parts were stripped with paint stripper to remove the bulk of paint before being put into the media blaster and all traces of remaining paint and rust were blasted off. It was then a case of filling any dents or heavy rust pitting, smoothing it out then applying a few layers of high build primer to all the panels. Once the primer was cured i gave all the panels a coat of guide coat to help me see any defects that were left and once happy that the surface was perfectly smooth i proceeded to load up the spray booth with all the body panels again and paint all of them with several layers of basecoat R109 passion red. I then removed the tank from the booth and headed to my vinyl application area to apply the new decals before the clear coat. Some of you may have noticed that the decals are slightly different than the ones i removed and that is because i had these ones specially made to remove the black background from the lettering as ive always thought the black makes the logo look untidy and unfinished now i know some of you will say that its not an OEM restoration now which is true but its my ATC and i want to have it my way and have it slightly unique ;). Once the decals were on i applied several layers of clear coat to give me a high build for deep gloss and enough layer thickness that if it gets scratched during use one day i stand a good chance of wet flatting and polishing it out rather than having to re-paint a panel. Once the clear coat was dry i set all the parts out for the usual ending shots and sat down for 5 to admire the shine then made a start on the next episode.
