How to Use an Edge Finder | Machine Shop Talk Ep. 6

In this episode of #machineshop talk, Ian Sandusky explains how to use an edge finder to pick up the zeros on your part. If most of your #machining work in your shop is done on a #milling machine, you are likely to be very familiar with edge finders. Sometimes called wigglers or wobblers, these little tools are one of the most used devices when it comes to finding the edge of your workpiece or locating the zeros on your part. The body of a typical mechanical edge finder is composed of two sections: the orbiting tip and the main body. Finding part zero with a mechanical edge finder is a visual process that involves a few simple steps. The first thing you'll need to do is put in the edge finder in toolholder (CAT 40) and spin it at 1,000 RPM. Next, approach the edge of the part with the orbiting tip. Once the orbiting tip aligns with the body you'll know that the edge of the part is very close. Keep moving the edge finder until you see the tip "kicking" off-center. Last, to calculate the zero you'll need to factor in the radius of the edge finder tip.
