Meteora is a landscape of towering sandstone pillars located in central Greece near the Pindus Mountains. These rock formations were created from sediment deposited by ancient rivers and seas, later uplifted and carved by erosion, weathering, and seismic activity. Over millions of years, water and wind sculpted the sandstone into steep columns rising abruptly from the Thessalian plain. Their isolation, elevation, and sheer faces limited access and shaped human use of the site, leading to the construction of monasteries atop the pillars where geography provided natural defense and separation. This video uses Google Earth imagery to show how geography shapes cities and sites.
