“Citizenship and Identity in Italy and the United States: Contestations and Struggles” was an academic conference that took place February 9–10, 2023, at the American Academy in Rome. The event brought together scholars from around the world to explore the evolving nature of Italian and American citizenship—and the forces of nationalism, colonialism, racism, dictatorship, and immigration that have produced them—over the last two hundred years. The two-day conference was organized by Marla Stone, the Academy’s Andrew W. Mellon Humanities Professor and a 1996 Rome Prize Fellow. The proceedings featured four panels as well as four keynotes, from Brenda E. Stevenson, Michael Vorenberg, Stephanie Malia Hom (2011 Fellow), and Pamela Ballinger (2002 Fellow, 2011 Affiliated Fellow). The final presentation of the conference was given by Michael Vorenberg of Brown University. He spoke on “Reconstruction as Risorgimento: The Creation and Limits of US National Citizenship in the Long Nineteenth Century.” The conference was free and open to the public.
