(19 Nov 2017) China's presidential envoy visited traditional sites in North Korea on Sunday to emphasize the shared history between the neighbouring countries. Song Tao, head of the Chinese Communist Party's International Department, first went to a tower in Pyongyang that commemorates Chinese soldiers who fought with North Korea during the Korean War. He and his group then drove out of town to another landmark related to China's participation in the Korean War - North Korea calls it a Martyr's Cemetery, and Chinese authorities usually refer to it as the Chinese People's Volunteers Cemetery. The cemetery includes a bust of Mao Anying, son of Chinese leader Mao Zedong, who died during the Korean War. After visiting the cemetery, Song Tao went on to the nearby tunnel complex which was the headquarters of the Chinese army during the Korean War. It is not known whether Song Tao met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Song Tao's predecessor, Wang Jiarui, met Kim Jong Un, as well as North Korea's previous leader, Kim Jong Il. Song Tao is expected to leave Pyongyang on Monday.
