Vocal Fold (vocal cord) Injections - how and why, with demonstration by Dr. Anca Barbu (VFI) The vocal folds (or vocal cords) are part of the larynx (voice box) They open when you breathe They close when you talk, sing, cough, swallow The vocal folds affect speech/voice, swallowing, and breathing When the vocal fold is weak (paretic) or paralyzed the voice is breathy, weak, and raspy Swallowing can also be a problem due to aspiration - when food or drink "go down the wrong pipe" into the windpipe. Cough can be ineffective or weak as well Vocal Fold Injections (VFI) can be performed to bulk up the vocal folds when they are weak/paralyzed, thinned, bowed, etc... in order to improve voice, prevent aspiration, improve cough. VFI used to be done only in the operating room under general anesthesia through metal tubes through the mouth (rigid laryngoscopes). Now it frequently be performed in the office with needles through the neck (transcutaneous) or through the mouth (transoral). This video demonstrates Dr. Anca Barbu, a Laryngeal Surgeon (or laryngologist) performing the transoral approach in the office.
