My videos are aimed at young writers, teachers, tutors and parents. This latest series of tutorials focuses on POETRY. Poetry encourages writers to have FUN with words. It serves as a catalyst, sparking a deep-seated love for language. For reluctant writers, poems provide a gateway, a path to unlock their creativity. The easiest way to write a poem is to look at an example that you like and copy its structure and rhythm. This is what I have done here. I present and explain some exemplar poems that I know you're going to love. I then challenge you to have a go at writing one yourself! Today's tutorial introduces the ancient Japanese art of Haiku. A three line poem made up of exactly 17 syllables. It is in the simplicity of this format that great depth of thought can be expressed. Haikus invite readers to pause, reflect and find beauty in fleeting moments of life. They teach writers to be more exact with their vocabulary choices and to discard irrelevant words. Importantly, they are fun and satisfying to write.
