We are off on another trip of discovery. For the first overnight spot, we stay at Lee's Ferry campground in the southern portion of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. In the late afternoon, we enjoy a little golden hour landscape photography overlooking the Colorado River. There are some intensely red cliffs on the eastern shore of the Colorado at this location. On the campground side, you walk down to the river's edge and stroll on the shore. On this visit, we spent time exploring the Lonely Dell Ranch at Lee's Ferry. The ranch was the original homestead for Mr. John Doyle Lee who ran the ferry operation that allowed travellers to cross the Colorado River (before the existence of the Navajo Bridge). After Mr. Lee's death, his wife continued to operate the ferry for 2 years. In 1879, Mr. Johnson was hired by the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormon church) to operate the ferry. The Navajo Bridge was operational by 1929. At the ranch, we explore many of the remaining buildings and relics of the ferry and ranching era. There is a lovely orchard that was beginning to blossom at the time of our visit. We also stroll out to the old cemetary that remains near the site of the ranch.
