Katse Dam is the highest dam in Africa and is ranked amongst the ten largest concrete arch dams in the world by volume of water stored, With a capacity of nearly 2 billion cubic meters and a surface area of 38,5 square kilometers. Tours of the dam can be booked at the information office and are well worthwhile to marvel at the structure which took a total of 6 years to construct. Besides this Katse dam offers many attractions including a botanical garden, Bokong Nature Reserve, mountain biking, bird watching, nature trails, horse trails, fly fishing, 4 X 4 trails and boat cruises to mention but a few. The Katse Lodge is well located in an elevated position with stunning views over the dam and surrounding mountain scenery, but of late reports indicate that the hotel is not only in serious need of upgrading, but is expensive for the run down condition it is in. This is indeed sad to hear as otherwise it is a great destination especially for 4X4 adventurers. Please be advised to research the activities you wish to participate in before making your reservations. With the deterioration of the condition of the Katse Lodge it is possibly only a matter of time before this effects the quality and reliability of activities in the area. I can unfortunately not comment on these attractions as we did not have the time to indulge. The road to Katse from Ficksburg is a bikers dream with the sweeping bends and turns. However be aware that there are frequent rock and and landslides especially in the rainy season, so please exercise caution and drive with care. Buthe Buthe is a typical African town with little respect for rules of the road so proceed with caution. Numerous traders ply their trade on what is left of pavements leaving the pedestrians and parked vehicles no option but to encroach on the road. Of particular interest was a tailor whose antiquated Singer sewing machine still took pride of place on a street corner where the owner ply’s his trade. No idea what he does when it rains?
