Traveling with a toddler doesn’t always go as planned. While in Lisbon, our daughter developed a fever, and we decided not to wait it out. Instead, we took her to CUF Tejo, a private hospital in Lisbon, to see what emergency care looks like in Portugal without insurance. Just to walk in the door, the cost was €400. After the visit, we were refunded €270, leaving the total much lower than we expected. The care was efficient, professional, and reassuring. The doctors and staff spoke excellent English, explained everything clearly, and treated our daughter with real attentiveness. In this video, we break down: Why we chose a private hospital in Portugal The actual cost of an ER visit without insurance What the experience was like as foreign parents How this compares to what a similar visit might cost in the U.S. This isn’t medical advice — just our real experience navigating healthcare abroad as traveling parents. If you’re traveling internationally with kids, especially to Portugal, we hope this helps set expectations and reduce some of the unknowns.
