Trachoma begins as an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the inner surface of the eyelids) and the cornea. Repeated infections cause the inner eyelid to become rough and scarred, leading the eyelashes to turn inward (a condition called trichiasis). The inward-turned lashes rub against the cornea, causing pain, corneal opacity, and eventually blindness if left untreated.
