#forro #nordeste #brazilianmusic "Feira Nordestina São Cristóvão in Rio de Janeiro offers a window into life in the Northeast of Brazil. Occupying an enormous space of 32,000 squared meters, it is Rio’s largest fair and with over 600 stalls of Bahian (from Bahia) products and other northeastern goodies, it has plenty to offer, from music and drinks to food and souvenirs. We give you the low down on this vibrant, must-visit fair. ... Music With Northeastern Vibes The fair is always lively and buzzing, especially on the weekend. There is always live music which is typically Forró or Baião, the anthems from the northeast, and the best acts are on Fridays and Saturdays. At any time of day, people will be singing or dancing to the music, getting swept into its rhythmic beats and getting out of their chairs to dance to some Forró which, with its intimacy and swinging moves, is wonderful to watch. As well as music, sometimes there are rodas of Capoeira where experienced capoeiristas form a circle and perform mind-blowing moves of immense agility and speed." - https://theculturetrip.com/south-amer... "Forró is a genuinely Northeastern artistic expression, and its origins date back to the 19th century. Let's explore more details: Origin of Forró The term “forró” has several meanings and can refer to the musical rhythm, the dance style and even the festival in which it takes place. Initially, forró was associated with popular dances held in the Northeast of Brazil, especially in the states of Pernambuco, Paraíba, Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte. These dances were called “forrobodó”, “forrobodança” or “forrobodão”. At the time, the places where these parties took place had floors made of “dirt”, that is, they had no covering, just dirt. People danced dragging their feet to prevent dust from rising, hence the term “rastapé” or “arrasta-pé”. There are also similarities between forró and toré, an indigenous celebration in which participants also drag their feet on the ground. In addition, forró was influenced by Dutch and Portuguese rhythms and European ballroom dances. Origin of the Name “Forró” Historian and folklorist Câmara Cascudo suggests that the term “forró” is a derivation of “forrobodó”, which in turn comes from the French word “faux-bourdon”, meaning “out of tune”. Another theory suggests, without historical proof, that the name was created from an English expression. According to this theory, British engineers who worked in the region of Pernambuco during the construction of the Great Western Railway used to throw parties for illustrious figures. Their invitations included the expression “for all”, which means “for everyone” in Portuguese. The local people then began to pronounce it “forró”. Popularization and Influence The singer and composer Luiz Gonzaga, known as the King of Baião, played a fundamental role in the popularization of forró throughout Brazil. His songs, such as “Forró de Mané Vito” and “Forró no Escuro”, won over the public and spread the style. The migration from the Northeast to other states in Brazil in the 1960s and 1970s also contributed to the spread of forró. Today, Brazilians enjoy forró throughout the country and celebrate it on December 13, which marks the birth of Luiz Gonzaga. Musical Style and Instrumentation Forró is associated with other genres such as xote, xaxado and baião. The instrumental base includes the accordion, the triangle and the zabumba. In addition to Luiz Gonzaga, great representatives of forró include artists such as Jackson do Pandeiro, Dominguinhos and Sivuca. In short, forró is much more than a musical style; it is a cultural heritage of Brazil, representing the rich diversity and vibrant musical heritage of the country. Celebrating forró is celebrating the identity and culture of a people, keeping alive a tradition that continues to enchant and inspire people all over the world." - https://musicanobrasil.com.br/forro-c...
