Low clouds forced us down into the hills near Sochi on an armed reconnaissance tasking. Rules were simple: visually identify the convoy — civilian traffic meant RTB. Military vehicles meant engagement. What we didn’t expect was radar-guided AAA buried inside the column. The first attack run ended in a wall of flak. The second nearly the same. On the final pass, cluster munitions finally broke the convoy — but not without cost. Both jets took heavy damage. Fuel was bleeding out. No runway. No recovery. Only controlled glides back to friendly territory.
