Youth Protests in Asia in the Last Decade

Dec. 4, 2025: Youth Protests in Asia in the Last Decade Recent protests in Nepal have brought renewed attention to youth activism in Asia. What is the history, pattern, and role of cultural mobilization in these movements? In this illustrated talk, Jeffrey Wasserstrom drew on two of his books — “Vigil: Hong Kong on the Brink” (2020) and “The Milk Tea Alliance: Inside Asia’s Struggle Against Autocracy and Beijing” (2025) — to highlight how songs, slogans and symbols drive struggles for change. Focusing on Hong Kong, Thailand and Burma, he also traced parallels to nearby movements, including China’s White Paper protests. This public lecture series is organized by the 21st Century China Center at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS).
