Lent is a return to the basics of the spiritual life. This homily breaks open Genesis, original sin, and the lie that God’s voice cannot be heard. In this homily we return to the basics at the beginning of Lent by revisiting the story of Genesis and the fall of Adam and Eve. Too often this account is treated like a simple children’s story, but Scripture presents a profound theological reality about sin, truth, and our relationship with God. The original sin was not merely the eating of fruit, but a layered disobedience rooted in distrust of God, silence in the face of temptation, and the desire to define truth apart from the Lord. The ancient lie of the serpent continues in every age, convincing us that God is distant, that His voice cannot be heard, and that truth is subjective. This homily calls us back to spiritual maturity, discipline in prayer, and the courage to reject the lie that we cannot hear God. We were created for intimacy with Him, not isolation. Lent is a return to the fundamentals of the spiritual life: listening to God, resisting sin, and pursuing heroic virtue rather than mediocrity.
