Jill Waterman is an Anishinaabe artist and fashion designer from Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan, U.S.A, whose craftsmanship is a true testament to cultural preservation and sustainability. Beyond fashion, Jill works in traditional bark art, creating canoes, wigwams, and baskets. Applying these skills to the fashion industry, Jill blends traditional, hand-harvested, and natural materials - such as birch bark, porcupine quills, corn, corn husks, and seeds - with modern, contemporary designs. In this episode, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of the Mandaamin - the Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) word for corn or maize - and it’s spiritual significance to the Anishinaabe people. Jill shares candidly about the importance of connection and community in Indigenous cultures. She is a gentle reminder that it is never too late to return home nor reconnect to ones cultural ways of life. A special thank you to the Indigenous Fashion Arts Festival for their collaboration and support.
