V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai, the inventor of Email, is an M.I.T.-trained systems scientist/biologist, entrepreneur and polymath. In 1978 as a 14-year-old research scholar, working at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, he created the first full-scale electronic version of the interoffice mail system (Inbox, Outbox, Folders, Memo, Attachments, etc). He coined the term "email", to name this system, thus defining and giving to the world, email, the one we all know and use today. In 1982, the U.S. government formally recognized him as the inventor of email by awarding him the first U.S. Copyright for "Email", "Computer Program for Electronic Mail System, " at a time when Copyright was the only way to recognize software inventions. On February 16, 2012, the Smithsonian institution acquired Shiva's computer code, artifacts and papers, documenting email's invention , for posterity, into the Archives of the National Museum of American History. Dr. Ayyadurai holds four degrees from M.I.T. across the fields of engineering, media and biology. Following his doctorate in Systems Biology from M.I.T.'s Department of Biological Engineering, he was awarded a U.S. Fulbright Fellowship to conduct fieldwork in India to explore the link between Siddha/Ayurveda and modern systems biology, resulting in the creation of Systems Health. He has recently developed CytoSolve, a scalable computational platform for the dynamic integration of distributed molecular pathway modes, and is currently Director of Systems Biology Group at the International Center for Integrative Systems and is also the Chairman & CEO of CytoSolve, Inc.
