(8 Dec 1995) English/Nat The Rwandan government has agreed to extend the United Nations mission for an another three months. The U-N mandate was due to have expired on Friday. The peacekeepers can now stay on - but the number of troops is to be cut. Using four-wheel drive trucks and helicopters the U-N military observers in Rwanda try to visit every village. The Kibuye area was on of the hardest hit by last years genocide. At least 100-thousand people were slaughtered in this mountainous region near the borders with Burundi and Zaire. While this team of Canadian and Nigerian military officers dropped off medical supplies at a clinic they found a woman who'd been severely beaten. SOUNDBITE: We are the military observers for UNAMIR and we are posted hare in the Kibuye prefecture. Our mission is to monitor the conditions in the commune and we report on the conditions that we see or that we hear and the alleged conditions that we are told. SUPER CAPTION: Captain Daniel Mantion, Canadian Armed Forces UNAMIR Tensions run high between the majority Hutu population and the small number of Tutsis who hold power by virtue of the army and the Kigali government. Over 1.8 million Rwandans live in refugee camps outside the country in fear of retaliation for the genocide. SOUNDBITE: It was rough here for everyone. For both on the survivors side and now the people have survived this war and its been a terrible thing that occurred. The people that are trying to go on with their day-to-day life don't feel secure unless the U-N are here because right now, as I have mentioned, there isn't much going on as far as rehabilitation or reunification activities. And Its not because I think the local government doesn't want to get on, it just doesn't have the resources to do that and the presence of the U-N would assist that. SUPER CAPTION: Captain Daniel Mantion, Canadian Armed Forces UNAMIR The Rwandan government has backed away from earlier demands for the peacekeepers to go. But the U-N won't be there forever - and eventually Rwanda must stands on its own feet.
