Car crashes are one of the most common reasons that people are sent to the trauma center. “It’s tragic, because we all have families, we all have kids and then we see that happen. It’s definitely preventable and it’s very hard. Peoples lose lives. People’s lives change for something that is preventable.” Lee Health Trauma Surgeon Dr. Sergey Kozyr said injuries are usually significantly worse if the victims decided not to wear their seatbelts. “They come in in pretty bad shape. You can imagine someone who should be wearing a seatbelt but isn’t. They become like a projectile missile either flying through the windshield or bounces around the car, injuring themselves, and some of the other passengers.” The CDC said seatbelts reduce the risk of death by 45% and cut the risk of serious injury in half among drivers and front seat passengers, but still one in seven people don’t buckle up. “It could be a mile. A lot of times people think I’m not going to restrain myself or the kids because it’s right there, I can see the store or the post office, but statistically most accidents happen around the victims home,” said Dr. Kozyr. It’s also important you wear it the right way. “When put it across your lap, it should be placed along the upper thighs and the pelvis region, and not the abdomen. It may save your life, but it can cause severe damage if it’s placed improperly across the abdomen,” said Dr. Kozyr. Kids 13 and under should always ride in the backseat. If they use a car seat, be sure that it is installed properly. “Unfortunately, we seek quite a bit of that as well. Even though the child itself was sitting in the car seat appropriately, but the car seat itself is not latched and horrible things happen.” Preventing critical injury one click at a time.
