Water lilies, scientifically known as Nymphaeaceae are a family of about 60 species of freshwater flowering plants. They are native to both temperate and tropical parts of the world. The leaves of water lilies are round, waxy-coated and float in quiet freshwater habitats. The stalks of these leaves arise from thick, fleshy, creeping underwater stems that are buried in the mud. The flowers are showy, fragrant and solitary, borne at or above the water surface on long stalks that are attached to the underground stems. Each flower has a spiral arrangement of its numerous petals. Water lilies provide food for fish and wildlife but sometimes cause drainage problems because of their rapid growth. Many varieties have been developed for ornamental use in garden pools and conservatories. Some species of water lilies also have submerged leaves. The common North American white water lily is Nymphaea odorata, and the European white water lily is Nymphaea alba. Both species have reddish leaves when young and large fragrant flowers.
