🎥 Meet Luca Liebscht, researcher in the Data Analytics & Visualization Group, BSC-CNS at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. Half german, half Italian, Luca lives in Barcelona since he was a child. At the BSC, he works on creating digital twins of urban spaces to support better city planning. Through his research in the European projects vCity and REALLOCATE project, he is helping to map and understand the evolution of Barcelona’s cycling infrastructure. Using detailed historical data provided by the Barcelona City Council, Luca and the Urban Data Science team have visualised how the city’s network of bike lanes has transformed from just 7 km in 1990 to 268 km today. This work not only reveals how far the city has come but also highlights where further improvements are needed to make cycling safer and more hashtag#accessible for everyone. By combining data on infrastructure, accidents, and citizen perceptions, Luca’s research aims to identify safety hotspots, model bicycle flows, and support the hashtag#development of more inclusive, sustainable mobility policies. His work exemplifies how High-Performance Computing and urban data science can empower cities to plan smarter, data-driven interventions. This research is part of Cycling, one of the Use Cases of the vCity project that is expected to see the light at the next edition of the Smart City Expo World Congress. 💻 Watch the full interview to learn how Luca uses advanced data visualisation and modelling to make Barcelona more bike-friendly. #UrbanMobility #BikeLanes #Barcelona #DataViz #CyclingInfrastructure #DigitalTwins #UrbanDataScience #OpenData #BSC #vCity #REALLOCATE
