Today we'll be going on a winter morning trip to Brunate, a breathtaking town in northern Italy! Located at the top of the mountain directly east to the city of Como, Brunate is a place of many wonders. First of all, the view! From the many viewpoints dotted throughtout the town you'll see countless mesmerizing sceneries! The city center of Como, with its iconic cathedral and lakefront, and the imposing Alps, about 100 km (60 miles) away but still perfectly visible, are just an example. On a perfectly clear day you can even see Milan and its skyscrapers from up here! Speaking of lakes, the south-western branch of Lake Como is perfectly visible as well, with the lakeside towns of Cernobbio and Moltrasio right at the forefront. The view easily reaches the nearby Switzerland, and continues all the way to the snowy massif of the Mt. Rosa, the second highest of Europe and the Alps. It doesn't end there though: at the very top of Brunate you will find a lighthouse, standing tall at the very peak of the mountain! Built in the 1920s as a monument in memory of Alessandro Volta*, the Voltian lighthouse can be accessed (when it's open) by paying a small ticket fee. You can then climb its stairs to the top, where an observation deck will offer you the best panorama that you could ever ask for! On a clear day you'll be able to an incredible scenery from the Alps all the way to the ligurian Apennines. The skyline of Milan can also be visible, with its skyscrapers and other iconic buildings! (A fun fact about the lighthouse is that from it you can even spot the statue positioned at the very top of the cathedral of Milan!) Brunate is also renowed for its funicular railway, that connects the mountaintop town with the city down below! While walking around the narrow streets and alleys you might notice something: there are lots of beautiful villas everywhere! Probably a quirk of having such a beautiful view. :) Most were built between the late 19th and early 20th century, when the town had a huge development, both as a luxurious place to live and as a tourist destination. What are we waiting for? Let's check it out! *Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) was an Italian physicist and chemist, mainly known to be the inventor of the first electric battery and the discoverer of methane. He was born, spent most of his life and died in Como, making him a symbol of the city itself. His name can be found throughout the city, from the Voltian temple (a museum dedicated to him), the motto of the city (''Como, city of Alessandro Volta), the name of a district (originally called Camnago, he had a countryside house there. The name was changed to Camnago Volta in his honor after his death). Last but not least, the Voltian lighthouse. Built for the 100° anniversary of his death, it stands tall over the city and the entire surrounding area!
