Actual drifter and simulated trajectories following the GlobCurrent 15-m ocean current

This 15-m ocean current is a combination of the geostrophic and Ekman components. Current magnitude is shown by streamlines coloured in cm/s (scale at upper left). Shading (scale at upper right) is land and shallow bathymetry. Grey vectors are ERA Interim winds. Simulated trajectories are launched once a day and are advected passively by the GlobCurrent 15-m combined current for a maximum of 24 days. Good correspondence is seen where simulated and actual drifters are collocated. The GlobCurrent geostrophic velocity estimates are based on the synergy of satellite altimetry, gravimetry, and in situ data. Modelling of the Ekman component is based on the approach described in Rio et al. [2003; 2011; 2012].
