In this demo video, we show how an attacker can exploit the tarfile vulnerability within Spyder IDE. Spyder IDE uses a file type with the extension .spydata, this data is used in order to populate the variable explorer and the file is often shared between researchers. However, since the .spydata file is actually a tar file underneath the hood, the program uses tarfile to extract all of the files within the .spydata file. In the video we show how we leverage this to overwrite the programs source code and even add a social engineering aspect to try and gain administrator access.
