In 1973, Canada issued a special 25-cent coin to mark the Centennial of the North-West Mounted Police, which later evolved into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The reverse design of this coin features a Mountie in ceremonial attire, holding a bamboo-shafted lance, as part of the Musical Ride. This design was crafted by Walter Ott, a distinguished engraver at the Royal Canadian Mint. However, what makes this coin particularly intriguing is the presence of two obverse varieties: the 'Small Bust' and the 'Large Bust.' During the initial minting process, a small number of coins were struck using an obverse die from the 1972 issue, resulting in the Large Bust variety.
