Dum Philippus moritur is a dark political and moral lament, written in response to the death of a ruler and the collapse of ethical order that follows. The poem portrays a world in which: virtue is destroyed by corruption deceit replaces moral custom law loses its foundation sweetness turns to bitterness reason no longer prevails The death of a single figure becomes a symbol of systemic decay — not merely a personal loss, but the unravelling of trust, faith, and justice. Rather than mourning a man, the text mourns a broken order. This is my original musical composition, based on the medieval Latin poem Dum Philippus moritur, preserved in the Carmina Burana manuscript collection. The text was historically set to music by Carl Orff in his cantata Carmina Burana. This composition, however, is entirely original and does not reference Orff’s musical material, using only the original medieval text as its foundation. 📜 Original Latin Text [Verse 1] Dum Philippus moritur, Palatini gladio, Virtus mox conteritur Scelerosi vitio. [Chorus] Ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah [Verse 2] Dulcis mos obtegitur A doli diluvio, Heu, quo progreditur Fidei transgressio! [Chorus] Ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah [Instrumental] [Verse 3] Lex amara legitur, Dum caret principio, Mel in fel convertitur, Nulla viget ratio. [Chorus] Ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah [Outro] Ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah Ah-ah-ah-ah ✨ Artistic English Translation [Verse 1] When Philip dies, by the sword of the Palatine, virtue is swiftly crushed by the vice of the corrupt. [Verse 2] Gentle custom is drowned in a flood of deceit. Alas — how far the betrayal of faith has gone! [Verse 3] Bitter law is proclaimed once it loses its foundation. Honey turns into gall, and reason no longer holds sway. #orchestral #latinlanguage #cinematicscore #operatic #epicorchestra #neoclassical #hybridorchestral #mythic #ancient #ancientmusic #mythological #legendary #epicmyth #ancientsound #forgottenworld
