Called the "Great Hymn to the Aten," this beautiful poem-like prayer was composed by the 18th Dynasty Pharaoh Akhenaten. It celebrates an immanent, singular divinity who provides abundantly for all the nations of the world. Since it pre-dates the Bible, religious scholars have noted its remarkable similarity in wording to prayers to God found in the Book of Psalms. Pharaoh Akhenaten used the sun as a central metaphor to represent God and his life-giving presence in all things, and during his reign he banned former practices such as depicting God in human or animal-form. He also banned the worship of Amun, a superhuman being associated with death and called the 'hidden one' by his followers.
