We explore historic Hornitos in California's legendary Gold Country, "The Mother Lode", visit Domingo Ghirardelli's very first store where he perfected and sold his now famous chocolates before moving to San Francisco and becoming known throughout the world, walk the route of the 100+ year-old Day of The Dead procession from downtown Hornitos to the 150 year-old St. Catherine of Siena Church and Hornitos Cemetery, locate ruins of the above-ground graves, i.e., "Little Ovens", from which Hornitos derives its name, and retrace the stomping grounds and escape route of the legendary Gold Country bandit, Joaquin Murrieta. We also take a short excursion to the site of the once "rough-and-rowdy" mining camp of Quartzburg, where countless trouble-makers were driven out of town, only to relocate a few miles down the road in Hornitos. And yes, I realize it's another very long video, but I again wanted to include everything I thought relevant in the story of today's quiet little Hornitos. Once being a Gold Rush town with a population of around 15,000 at the time of its historic notoriety, it is said the population these days hovers at around 75 residents. It is certainly a sleepy, quiet little town today, but this also makes it so fascinating and easy to explore. The historic cemetery, located atop a hill behind the small town, is in itself worthy of exploring, with so many headstones dating back to the mid-1800's, a time-line reflecting the peak of gold mining activity along California's foothill country, or Mother Lode. So I again thank you for joining me on this little historic excursion into some of California's history. And a quick note: I will be returning to the Yosemite Valley Railroad video series within the next few weeks. Other business has temporarily interrupted my hiking excursions, but I'm committed as always to finishing the task of retracing as much of the old route as possible. Thank you for your patience, and again for tagging along as we explore some old railroad history. You're appreciated. #hornitos #goldcountry #motherlode #californiahistory
